Having explored the collections of the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery, Kate Bryan goes behind the scenes at Tate Britain. The collection includes works by some of the most celebrated artists in British culture, from William Blake to Chris Ofili, as well as an astonishing archive.
In part one, Kate finds out about the origins of Tate Britain and the development of modern art in Britain. Kate begins her journey by meeting director Maria Balshaw to hear about the different Tate sites and how they interconnect. She explores the life and work of William Blake before discovering the woman behind the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Elizabeth Siddal. A look at JMW Turner's late works leads Kate into the 1900s and an exploration of early century pioneers like Gwen John and Walter Sickert.
