In 1795, three teenage boys discovered a strange, man-made depression in the ground on Oak Island–a small, wooded island just off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada. As the boys began to dig, they found a number of intriguing artifacts. It was the end of the piracy era and rumors of buried treasure were rampant. The boys' discovery launched a treasure hunt that has spanned more than 200 years, cost millions of dollars and involved dozens of speculators, engineers and even famous personalities such as John Wayne, Errol Flynn and Franklin D. Roosevelt. It has also cost six men their lives. According to legend, a seventh must die before the mystery will be solved in The Curse of Oak Island. The search had gone dormant, but last year, Rick and Marty Lagina, two brothers from Michigan with a life-long interest in the mystery, renewed the efforts to discover the legendary treasure. For them, finding the 17th century Spanish coin in Oak Island's drained swamp near the so-called "Mercy Point" last summer was a game-changer. Now, Marty, the skeptic, has real evidence that may make his multi-million dollar investment pay off. Along with Rick, the true believer, they return this year re-energized to risk even more in search of the ultimate answers that lie beneath Oak Island. They will systematically hunt all the major areas of interest–starting with the swamp where the Spanish coin was found. They will redouble their efforts, bringing in even more of the latest technology, top experts and the most sophisticated machinery that Oak Island has ever seen. They also have their sights set on learning the entire truth behind the allegedly man-made Smith's Cove, getting to the bottom of Dan Blankenship's 10-X shaft, and even breaking ground in the original Money Pit.Oak Island has beaten or bankrupted everyone who has ever tackled it, never giving up its secrets. In order for Marty and Rick to risk the millions more it will take to get to the bottom of the Money Pit, they will need to find much more than a single Spanish coin. The stakes have never been higher–and the island curse may be preparing to take its next victim.
Brothers Rick and Marty Lagina now own most of Oak Island. Determined to resurrect the 200-year-old search for treasure, they explore an abandoned shaft called 10X and use water pressure to pump material to the surface. What they find gives them reason to believe that the stories of something buried on the island may very well be true.
A scuba team that includes Marty's son Alex Lagina dives Smith's Cove and finds non-indigenous coconut fibres and anomalous stones. These findings appear to be evidence of unexplained activity in what has been conjectured to be an ancient, engineered shore area. Meanwhile, metal fragments and cat bones are found in the slurry from 10X.
As Rick and Marty Lagina begin working to drain a swamp, they are visited by a woman who lost her father and brother to a tragic accident on Oak Island that gave rise to rumours of a deadly curse.
A visitor to the island presents Rick and Marty Lagina with his theory about where the treasure on Oak Island is located and the idea that the Menorah might be among the treasures for which they are searching.
Rick and Marty Lagina find what appears to be an antique Spanish copper coin that is the first evidence of treasure on Oak Island.
