As part of this year's Stand Up to Cancer campaign, Bear Grylls abandons 10 celebrities on an uninhabited island in the Pacific. Alone and marooned in just their clothes and with a handful of basic tools, they must survive entirely on their own.
In a brand new series of Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls, 10 brave celebrities endure four weeks surviving in one of the toughest environments on earth. All they will have are the clothes on their back, basic tools, medical supplies, 24 hours of water and each other. The aim of the game is simple - survive. The group, made up of celebrities from the worlds of sport, television, music and comedy, includes Breaking Bad actor RJ Mitte, Olympian and broadcaster Iwan Thomas, actor and Rizzle Kicks singer Jordan Stephens, comedian Mark Watson, actor Ryan Thomas, former Towie star Lucy Mecklenburgh, Olympian and TV presenter Sharron Davies, former Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton, comedian and writer Shazia Mirza, and TV doctor Sara Kayat. After Bear drops them in a crocodile-infested swamp, Iwan takes the reins and leads the group to a beach. But he's soon called into question by Shazia, who dislikes his gung-ho attitude.
Five days in, and still without fire, shelter or a proper meal, and having been lashed by a succession of tropical storms, the celebs are a soaking, miserable mess. While Breaking Bad actor RJ Mitte and Ex-TOWIE star Lucy Mecklenburgh are desperate to make fire, alpha males Ryan Thomas and Iwan Thomas decide to prioritise shelter - with disastrous consequences for the group. With Iwan and Lucy on the brink of hypothermia, it's left to RJ to save the day by constructing emergency cover out of palm leaves. The next morning, with the celebs close to breaking point, Bear is forced to send in his safety team. When ex-Pussycat Doll Melody stumbles across a caiman crocodile, will the group's weakened alpha males be strong enough to take on the island's most fearsome predator?
After two weeks on the island, ravaged by hunger, mosquitoes and sandflies, tensions are building in the camp. Musician Jordan Stephens in particular is attracting the ire of the other celebrities, who feel he's not pulling his weight. Comedian Shazia Mirza is throwing every ounce of energy into finding food. Exhausted from relentless hours of fishing, she has an accident. Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies finds a fishing net, but then makes a surprise announcement. With several of the celebs on the brink of quitting, the group need to find a sustainable source of food - and fast - if it is to survive.
After nearly three weeks on the island, the celebrities are still without shelter and ravaged by insect bites and lack of sleep. When the group start to build a communal bed, former Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton decides she wants one of her own; comedian Mark Watson is struggling with insomnia; and actor Ryan Thomas and Olympian Iwan Thomas go searching for food and perhaps a change of fortunes for the group.
After enduring brutal storms and little food for three weeks, a medical check-up reveals the group are now dangerously underweight and could even be at risk of organ failure. Iwan Thomas decides to head into the mangroves on a secret night hunt to kill a caiman crocodile - but he gets lost. Mel urges her campmates to build a waterproof shelter, without success. And when the mother of all storms strikes, the group is brought to its knees. Mel and Lucy send an angry ultimatum to Bear's team for emergency blankets and handwarmers. But will they get their way?
