Medium Allison DuBois is a strong-willed mother of three who has struggled since childhood to make sense of her visions of dead people. Hoping to prove to Allison that her dreams are stress induced, her scientist husband, Joe, sends descriptions of Allison's visions to a number of law enforcement agencies, expecting nothing to come of it. To his surprise, one of Allison's dreams bears an eerie similarity to a Texas homicide case involving a 17-year-old murder suspect. The case pits Allison against Capt. Kenneth Push, a cynical Texas Ranger who is suspicious of her psychic abilities. By the end of the investigation, Capt. Push has a new respect for Allison—and she makes a life-altering decision of her own.
Now that Allison's special abilities have been revealed to the public, everyone's lives have been turned upside down. Allison starts to have dreams about a boy who was kidnapped from a toy store, but is unable to turn to Devalos or Scanlon for help. She decides to call the company hired by the missing boy's family and makes an unusual deal with the company's investigator, Cynthia Keener.
Allison tries to help investigator Cynthia Keener find a missing teenage girl. Meanwhile, Ariel dreams of Allison's high school days from the 80's after being asked out to a concert without any chaperones.
Joe brings a reluctant Allison with him to a party at a prospective employer's house. Later on, the employer's daughter disappears, leading Allison to connect her recent dreams about Paris to the disappearance. Now it's up to Allison to save the daughter, which coincidentally will also secure Joe a job.
A young deaf girl is kidnapped, causing Allison to completely lose her hearing. With Allison at a loss, Joe decides to help her and Cynthia Keener investigate the kidnapping
Larry Watt, a defense attorney who has caused trouble in Allison's past, asks Allison to be a consultant for him. Low on money, Allison accepts his offer. She later has a dream that his client murdered his wife.
Devalos tries to reclaim the D.A.'s office. Allison's support of Devalos is tested when she has visions of Senator Jed Garrity, Devalos' strongest political supporter, involved in a horrible conspiracy.
Joe's mother pays a surprise visit, which worries Allison because she hasn't seen her since her psychic abilities became public knowledge. Meanwhile, Cynthia Keener tries to push Allison's dreams toward outstanding cases and Devalos and Scanlon are reunited with Allison in an unexpected way after an arson-related murder.
Allison tries to find the link between Ariel's prediction of a classmate's mother's death, dreams related to her case with Cynthia, and Devalos's murder case. She also must try to keep her mother-in-law Marjorie's secret hidden from Joe.
While working to locate a missing local girl, Allison learns about secrets from Cynthia Keener's past. Meanwhile, Joe's relationship with Allison is tested after Bridgette's science class project sparks his imagination.
A shocking and brutal conclusion awaits Allison and Cynthia as they delve into the decade-old case of the kidnapping and murder of Cynthia's daughter. Meanwhile, Joe tries to get funding for a new invention and Bridgette predicts good fortunes for her dad.
As Allison teams up with Scanlon to track down the dangerous "cougar" they believe is responsible for the murders of young men, she also has visions that Devalos's campaign is in jeopardy, with someone plotting against him.
When Joe presents his new solar power based invention to an investment firm, he piques the interest of venture capitalist Meghan Doyle. Meanwhile, FBI profiler agent Edward Cooper claims his return to Phoenix is to track down another serial killer, but Allison's dreams tell her otherwise.
Allison has visions of a friend of Scanlon and Lynn DiNovi dying in a home mishap. This causes her to struggle with connecting some recent "accidental" deaths, consequently putting her own health in jeopardy.
Allison meets Meghan Doyle, Joe's new business partner. Meanwhile, her old car stops working and Joe surprises her with a nice looking used car. The car ends up being the center of a horrible unsolved crime though.
Allison has dreams that help Scanlon in his search to find out who killed a wealthy local drug dealer. Allison and Scanlon are dumbfounded when Allison's dreams lead them to a severely impaired man with a bullet stuck in his brain. Meanwhile, Joe's partnership with Meghan Doyle is put in jeopardy.
Allison tries to help a young couple who thinks their house is haunted, but her efforts don't end well. Meanwhile, Meghan Doyle tries to sell her controlling interest in Joe's invention and Joe tries to save his own stake in it. An unexpected situation occurs between Devalos and Tom Van Dyke and the outcome affects the election for district attorney.
